• Royster in Cuba as U.S. Announces Renewed Diplomatic Relations

  On July 1, as President Obama announced the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba, twenty Atlanta government, business, and academic leaders were convening in Havana. Ivan Allen College Dean Jacqueline Royster was part of the group which was exploring the possibilities for Atlanta – Cuba relations should the U.S economic embargo against Cuba be eased.

  

• Juan Moreno-Cruz Appointed as BBISS Fellow

  The Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems has appointed 12 BBISS Fellows, including Assistant Professor of Economics Juan Moreno-Cruz.

  

• Stulberg Speaks at Warsaw Euro-Atlantic Summer Academy (WEASA)

  July 6, 2015

  On June 30, 2015, Dr. Adam Stulberg, Professor at the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs and Co-Director of the Center for International Strategy, Technology and Policy at Georgia Tech, gave two presentations at the 2015 Warsaw Euro-Atlantic Summer Academy (WEASA) that were entitled “Geopolitics of the Changing Gas Landscape” and “Russia-Ukraine-EU Gas Conflict: Strategic Developments and Implications.” Both presentations addressed the workshop’s core theme of “Energy Security.”

• Moreno-Cruz Awarded $300,000 NSF Grant

  The National Science Foundation has awarded a three-year $300,000 grant for research in environmental sustainability to Juan Moreno-Cruz, Assistant Professor of Economics.

  Ivan Allen College Dean Jacqueline J. Royster joined the Board of Directors of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta on June 15.

  

• Public Policy Featured at PMRA National Conference

  Faculty, students, and alumni of the School of Public Policy represented Georgia Tech at the recent Public Management Research Association's national conference held June 10 - 13, 2015. The Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota hosted the conference.

• GPB Premieres Documentary about Georgia Tech Alum Ivan Allen, Jr.

  June 12, 2015

  The original documentary Ivan Allen, Jr.- A Different Road premieres throughout the month of June on Georgia Public Broadcasting. Produced by Living Stories, the film creates a multifaceted portrait of Allen during his eight year service as mayor of Atlanta during the critical transitional years between 1962 and 1970. As the only elected leader from the South to testify in Congress in favor of civil rights legislation in 1963, Allen differentiated Atlanta from the rest of the segregated South.

  

• ROTC Stinger Battalion's Gurry Named Distinguished Honor Graduate from Air Assault School

  June 8, 2015

  Fifteen cadets from the Stinger Battalion, Georgia Tech's Army ROTC housed within the Ivan Allen College, traveled to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, this May to take part in the U.S. Army’s Air Assault School. The 10-day course is designed to prepare soldiers for missions that call for the use of multipurpose transportation and assault helicopters.

  

• Social Media Dialogue Predicts Election Outcome

  The advent of social media opened the doors to a wealth of possibility. Specifically, in the world of politics, social media allows the public to engage in dialogue with politicians. In a study conducted through the Nunn School of International Affairs and the School of Interactive Commputing, Michael L. Best and Amanda Meng determined that social media platforms can determine the results of an election.

  

• Economics Hosts a Series of Alumni Events throughout the Summer

  Chair of Economics David N. Laband and Assistant Professor Juan Moreno-Cruz hosted an Economics alumni dinner at the Strand Hotel Bistro on May 20 in New York City. On May 29, the School of Economics hosted an alumni event in Atlanta.

• Activist Films Bring Light to Human Trafficking in Atlanta

  June 1, 2015

  LMC undergraduate student Jack McRee and video production coordinator John Thornton are seeking to bring light to this issues of human trafficking through the affordance of film, portraying personal narratives of those affected and providing a call to action.

  

• 'Ministers at War' Named Book of the Month by BBC History Magazine

  May 19, 2015

  Jonathan Schneer’s book Ministers at War: Winston Churchill and his War Cabinet (Basic Books, 2015), was named Book of the Month by BBC History Magazine just one month after its March release in the U.K.

  

• Smith Awarded Henry Wallace Prize for Best Book in Agricultural History

  May 18, 2015

  Jenny Leigh Smith, assistant professor in the School of History, Technology, and Society, was named a recipient of the Henry Wallace Award for her book Works in Progress: Plans and Realities on Soviet Farms, 1930-1963 (Yale University Press, 2014).
