• McDonald’s New Course Will Examine Social and Political Issues in Professional Sports

  Mary McDonald, the Homer C. Rice Chair in Sports and Society in the Ivan Allen College School of History and Sociology, will teach a new course during the spring 2017 semester, “The Politics of Sports,” that explores the social, economic, and political issues that impact professional sports.

• Brown Appointed to Geographical Sciences Committee of the National Academies

  Marilyn Brown, a professor in the Ivan Allen College School of Public Policy, has been appointed to the Geographical Sciences Committee (GSC) of The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. 

• Goodman Participates in IEEE Intelligence and Security Informatics Conference

  Seymour Goodman, professor in the Ivan Allen College Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, participated in the 2016 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Intelligence and Security Informatics (ISI) conference, which took place in Tucson, Arizona from September 28 – 30, 2016.

  

• German Program Donor Spurlock Receives Order of Merit Award for Philanthropic Leadership

  Joachim Gauck, the president of the Federal Republic of Germany, awarded the Order of Merit First Class to Barry Spurlock, the Chairman of the Board of the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta. Spurlock, a Georgia Tech alumnus (ME 1965) is a friend to the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts and, with his wife Gail, established the Spurlock Study Abroad Scholarship Endowment Fund in our School of Modern Languages in 2012. The fund enables students enrolled in the Georgia Tech’s German and German Languages for Business and Technology (LBAT) programs to study in Germany for a semester. 

  

• Moreno-Cruz Invited to Kavli Frontiers of Science Symposium

  Juan Moreno-Cruz, an assistant professor in the Ivan Allen College School of Economics, has been invited by Marcia McNutt, president of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), to attend the organization's 15th Japanese - American Kavli Frontiers of Science symposium.

  

• Besedes Presents NAFTA Trade Research in Helsinki

  Tibor Besedes, an associate professor in the Ivan Allen College School of Economics, presented his research on the effects of the NAFTA during the European Trade Study Group Conference, which took place in Helsinki, Finland from September 9 - 11, 2016.

  

• Thomas and Team Win Judges’ Choice Award from MIT’s Climate CoLab

  Suriya Arulselvan (MSCE 2015) and Valerie Thomas, professor in  Georgia Tech’s Ivan Allen College School of Public Policy and the Anderson Interface Professor of Natural Systems in the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, were awarded the Judges’ Choice Award for the 2016 Aviation contest from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Climate CoLab.

• Georgia Tech Climbs in World University Rankings

  The World University Rankings released today by Times Higher Education show the Georgia Institute of Technology has moved from No. 41 to No. 33, the highest ranking among Georgia’s academic institutions.

  

• Taylor Speaks at Several Universities About National Science and Technology Leadership

  Mark Zachary Taylor, an associate professor in the Ivan Allen College Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, gave talks on his new book, The Politics of Innovation: Why Some Countries Are Better Than Others at Science and Technology, at several universities in September.

  Olga Shemyakina, an associate professor in the Ivan Allen College School of Economics, presented during the United Nations University’s  development conference “Responding to Crises” in Helsinki on September 23.

  

• Mitchell Participates in National Academies Science Panel on Emergency Warning Systems Research; Presents at CTIA Wireless Conference

  Helena Mitchell, executive director of the Center for Advance Communications Policy (CACP) at the Georgia Institute of Technology, attended a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine workshop on “The Future of Emergency Alert and Warning Systems: Research Directions.”

  

• Clifton Wins Award for Excellence in Student Research Using Historical Records

  Alice Clifton, a doctoral student in the History and Sociology of Technology and Science graduate program in the Ivan Allen College School of History and Sociology, has received the 2016 Award for Excellence in Student Research Using Historical Records.

  

• Public Policy Paper Reflects on Faculty Contributions to Nanotechnology Research

  September 21, 2016

  “Lessons from Ten Years of Nanotechnology Bibliometric Analysis,” a paper written by faculty in the Ivan Allen College School of Public Policy, has been accepted and will be presented at the upcoming International Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Blue Skies Forum on Science and Innovation Indicators in Ghent, Belgium, in September 2016.
