Ivan Allen College Lecturers Earn Promotion

Lee Hyunjeong Oh and Samba Sy, both lecturers in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts School of Modern Languages, will be promoted to senior lecturers effective Aug. 1.
Sy, who coordinates the French program, joined Georgia Tech as a part-time instructor in 2013 and became a full-time lecturer in 2015. He teaches beginner and intermediate French courses and also introduced Wolof courses to the curriculum. Sy directs the LBAT Senegal program and is the coordinator of the Introductory Language program.
He is a three-time recipient of the Class of 1940 Course Survey Teaching Effectiveness Award and earned the Class of 1934 Course Survey Teaching Effectiveness Award.
Sy has a master’s degree in political science from East Stroudsburg University and a master’s in French literature from Georgia State University, where he also received a graduate certificate in translation. Read more about Sy and his work here.
Oh, who coordinates the Korean program, joined Georgia Tech as a part-time instructor in 2010 and became a full-time lecturer in 2013. She has been instrumental in developing new courses such as Elementary Korean and Korean for Business.
She has received the Class of 1934 CIOS Honor Roll Award five times. Oh also advises student organizations, including GT Seoulstice, Oscar Band, K-Buzz K-Pop Club @ GT, and the GT Navy ROTC club.
“I am so happy whenever I get to interact with students and see their growth, which is one of the many reasons I like working at Georgia Tech,” Oh said.
Oh has a master’s degree in education from Cleveland State University and a bachelor’s degree in Korean language and literature from Yonsei University. Read more about Oh and her work here.
