Posted August 28, 2017

Tom Jenkins, a doctoral student in the Digital Media program is a finalist for the Foley Scholarship and GVU (Graphics, Visualisation, and Usability) Distinguished Master’s Student Award. He is advised by Carl DiSalvo, associate professor in the Digital Media Program in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication.

Jenkins is creating a design research project that uses an ecological approach to develop speculative Internet of Things devices for domestic outliers. He is interested in how Internet of Things might operate as a technical practice and a system of objects inside of cohousing communities. The Foley Scholars Program is the GVU’s highest award for student excellence in research contributions and computing. Finalists were selected for their research and new collaborative opportunities. These scholars are among the Center’s best and brightest students and alumni who have gone on to win further accolades in the industry and academia.

Additional Doctoral Foley Scholar Finalists include Daw-Wei Chen (PSYCH), Kayla DesPortes (HCC), Michaelanne Dye (HCC), Tesca Fitzgerald (CS), Matthew Guzdial (CS), Morgan Orangi (HCI), Miranda Parker (HCC), and Umashanthi Pavalanathan (CS).

Distinguished Master’s Student Finalists include Vedant Das Swain (HCI), Kanwon Lamount Rogers (HCI), and Anandghan Wagmare (HCI).
