Three Distinguished Visiting Scholars Appointed in School of Economics

The Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at Georgia Tech is pleased to announce three visiting scholars in the School of Economics for the 2017 – 2018 academic year. The appointees are Georgia Tech economics alumnus Danny R. Hughes of the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute, Juan Rubio-Amierez from Emory University, and Raymond Riezman from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

“These distinguished visiting professors will bring greater visibility to the School of Economics,” said Dean Jacqueline Royster. “Their expertise will strengthen our linkages with peers in the field and across sectors of societal influence. They will contribute significantly to our research and curricular strengths at the intersection of technologies and innovation, big data, global conflict, climate change, and the wider spectrum of human challenges addressed by 21st century economics.”

Danny R. Hughes, Ph.D., is the senior director and senior researcher at the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute. He is also an affiliate member of George Mason University’s Department of Health Administration and Policy. An economist by training his research focuses on the roles of technology, innovation, and incentives in the delivery and usage of health care services — with a specific focus on the economics of diagnostic imaging. He has a passion for developing mathematical models with practical and relevant policy applications and is equally at home developing optimization and simulation models common to operations research as he is at performing economic and econometric analyses. Hughes has published over 60 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals to include Health Affairs, JAMA Internal Medicine, and Medical Care. He has conducted research at the American College of Radiology, and served as Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Operations Specialist in the United States Army. He earned a B.S. in Economics from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Georgia.

Juan Rubio-Ramirez, Ph.D.,  is the Charles Howard Candler Professor of Economics at Emory University and a visiting scholar at the Central Bank of Spain, the Federal Reserve Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the European Central Bank. Rubio-Ramirez is an associate editor to the Journal of Econometrics and Quantitative Economics and has published his own work extensively. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.

Raymond Riezman, Ph.D., is a visiting scholar at University of California, Santa Barbara, visiting professor at Aarhus University, and the C. Woody Thompson Research Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Iowa. He is the founder and director of the Midwest International Economics Group. His research focuses on protection and preferential trading agreements, trade and technology transfer, political economy, voting theory, outsourcing, and experimental economics. His Ph.D. is from the Department of Economics at the University of Minnesota. He is an external research fellow at the Nottingham Centre for Research on Globalisation and Economic Policy (GEP), University of Nottingham, research fellow at the Center for Economic Studies - Institute for Economic Research (CES-ifo), Munich, associate editor of Economics Bulletin and associate editor at the Review of International Economics.
