Asad Receives Foley Scholar Award for Social Justice Research

Mariam Asad, a doctoral student in the Ivan Allen College School of Literature, Media, and Communication’s Digital Media program, received a Foley Scholar award from Georgia Tech’s GVU Center.

Asad, who is advised by Christopher Le Dantec, an assistant professor in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication, received $5,000 from the Foley Scholars Endowment. Her work explores digital advocacy tools, and she has extensively studied social justice movements in Atlanta communities.

Maia Jacobs and Clint Zeagler, doctoral students in the School of Interactive Computing, also received Foley Scholar awards. Tom Jenkins, a doctoral student in the Digital Media program, was named a Foley Scholar finalist for his research regarding Internet of Things devices in cohousing communities.

The Foley Scholars Endowment was established in 2007 during the 15th Anniversary of the GVU Center, and each year it provides funding for awards to outstanding graduate students. The award was established by colleagues of Jim Foley and GVU alumni to honor Foley's significant contributions in the field of computing, his influence on the work of others, and his dedication to interdisciplinary research.
