Brown Appointed to Geographical Sciences Committee of the National Academies
Posted October 13, 2016
Marilyn Brown, a professor in the Ivan Allen College School of Public Policy, has been appointed to the Geographical Sciences Committee (GSC) of The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.
The Geographical Sciences Committee (GSC) provides high-quality scientific, technical, and policy advice and recommendations to society and to government at all levels using the methods of spatial analysis and representation. The geographical sciences focus on understanding responses to the impacts of changing biophysical and human environments. Place-based responses in domains ranging from health to urbanization, hazards to migration, can be characterized in terms of vulnerability, resiliency, adaptation, and sustainability. The GSC addresses the geographic dimensions of human-environment interactions, spatial location and concentration, and place-based research and policy at all spatial scales. It fosters international cooperation by serving as a liaison to other national geographical organizations, and it initiates collaborative research programs among those organizations.
Brown received her Ph.D. in Geography from Ohio State University, and she joined the Ivan Allen College in 2006 after a distinguished career at the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where she led several national climate change mitigation studies and became a leader in the analysis and interpretation of energy futures in the United States. She previously served on six National Academies committees, including the Committee on America’s Climate Choices and the Board of Energy and Environmental Systems.
